Alabama (AL) was the 22nd state to join the United States, and its capital is Montgomery, AL. It was nicknamed “Heart of Dixie” because it’s in the very middle of the Deep South states (known informally as “Dixie”), and is known for being the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement.
